Our Garden - June 2016 |
The veg and fruit beds and coming along nicely. The potatoes are already in flower (the first earlies) so it will soon be time to taste them. |
The peas are doing well - and taste good too! |
I'm growing the courgettes in grow bags this year - they seem to like it. The plants inside the "halos" on the left are broccoli plants, kindly donated by Carole last time I was in Yorkshire. |
The French beans are starting to climb up their poles. These younger ones have yet to learn that trick! |
The older ones are already starting to flower as well so we should, hopefully, have some beans before too long. |
We're very happy to see lots of bees in the garden at the moment as they do their pollination work. |
These flying creatures aren't as much help in the garden though. |
The jackdaw has clearly got the hang of the feeders. |
Other regular visitors include starlings and squirrels to name but two. |
The Lady's Mantle's frothy flowers seem to be everywhere at the moment. |
The main cistus is really pretty this year - full of flowers. |
The nigella are just starting to come into flower. |
The smaller cistus is also doing well but it's got a long way to go to catch the other one up. |
These lovely flowers come back year after year - a very welcome sight. |
The roses are out all around the garden - they are lovely. |
The allium are putting on their usual good show. |
Nelly Moser was always my grandma's favourite clematis. |
A regular visitor, this vixen is quite happy around Jonathon and his camera. |
Sometimes it's a bit of a stretch! |
Although she doesn't seem to be looking at you, her ears never stay still and she's aware of everything that's going on around her. |
The roses are slowly climbing up the archway. Hopefully they'll be right over the top within the next coupld of years. |
There are various shrubs in flower - more food for the bees |
This is what this spiraea looks like at the moment - the flowers will burst out soon. |
The cotinus is flowering. Last year I cut it right back at this time of the year to make it more "red" but this year I'll let it flower. |
I've heard that geraniums are becoming a pain by self seeding everywhere. Ours self seed as well but they are very pretty so I often let them grow where they land. |
These ones, on the other hand, don't seem to self seed at all. |
As you can see we have a lot of pink in the garden. |
Janet gave me some calendula seeds this year which provide a nice contrast. They are in the patio beds with the marigolds and gazanias so all in the yellow / orange / cream spectrum. |
These marigolds look lovely but then just seem to lose their heads - perhaps they're too heavy for their stems. |
This is your more typical marigold - AKA slug magnets (but not as bad as the nicotiana) |
This potentilla obviously benefitted from being cut back hard last year - it's covered in flowers at the moment. |
These small lily of the valley flowers are quite happy popping up year after year in their bed (and anywhere else they self seed to) |
Yet another rose. |
No idea what this is or where it came from but it's quite dramatic and appeared in our front garden this year. |
Even the ornamental grasses are flowering at the moment. |
Some more prettily than other. |
Along with the garden we also have a few pots. We lost a couple of hostas over the winter but most survived and are doing well. |
We treated ourselves to some new pots and hydrangeas this year. The lavender and the pots that were on the steps are now in the gravel bed as that had a few gaps that needed to be filled. If all goes to plan, there'll be quite a few different colours for Linda this year. |
This is a climbing hydrangea we've had for a while. |
The pyrachanthas are flowering well - more berries for the birds in autumn. |
The irises in the bed didn't flower this year - no idea why - but the pond irises have made up for it. |
The snow in summer is hanging in there - a lot of it has died back but the plants that more in the shade are still doing well. |
I am more than happy to have poppies self seed around the garden - they are very welcome here. |
The alstromaeria are just coming into flower at the front of the house. The red roses are in full bloom and the yellow ones are starting to be past their best. Lots of colour. That's it for this time - more next month. |
