Our Garden - July 2017

It's July and we've had quite a mix of weather so far this summer ranging from very hot, sunny days to really heavy rain and cold. We should be used to the unpredicatable nature of it by now but we still moan about it!

Another complication this year is that we have scaffolding all around the house as Terry and Co sort out the roof and paint the outside.

The hydrangeas in the pots have done really well (it's only their second year). We do have to keep them watered so it's a good job the water butts have been kept topped up with the rain this season so far.

hydra

These two are in the beds and got very badly damaged by wind burn so had to be cut back quite severely. It seems strange not having a large mounds of heads half way down the garden but at least they are flowering and seem to have survived.

Oli

I'm really not sure how I managed to work in the garden without my trusty helper! That said, he seems to prefer sitting, sleeping and eating than doing anything useful.

echinops

Lovely echinops with very prickly thistle type leaves. The very heavy rain storm we had earlier in the week bashed them around so they've had to be staked up this weekend.

kerria

Yellow is such a lovely, bright colour in any garden. I think this path is getting a bit overgrown so better get the shears out.

I think the fish are just about getting used to Oli helping me when I feed them on a morning.

brassicas

The veg are coming along well. The broad beans and peas are finished but we've got a good store in the freezer; the early potatoes are dug up and lots have been eaten; the onions are drying out in the shed (and we've had one or two) and the runner beans and French beans are on their way. As for courgettes, it's good job we like them!

The tomatoes aren't quite ready yet.

Having had June off work, the garden was looking quite tidy but after two weeks it's badly in need of weeding and tidying up again!

hollyhock

I'm sure this hollyhock is in the wrong place. I planted quite a few more further back in the bed this year but they're not showing up.

honeysuckle

Another lovely scented plant is honeysuckle.

agapanthus

These African lillies like to have they roots "squashed" so it's taken them a while to get settled but perhaps they've finally reached where they need to be.

nigella

Very intricate Nigella, courtesy of seeds from the flowers grown from seeds that Janet gave me last year.

fuchsia

We started with plants in pots and we end in the same way. Our hostas are flowering better than they even have before (no idea why) and this fuchsia is doing well although some of the others are hidden under scaffolding so not doing too well. I'm sure they'll recover.

That's it for this month.
